Paulton Rovers were today coming to terms with the prospect of staging the biggest FA Cup game in their history.

The team from the Zamaretto League Division One South & West became the lowest-placed side still left in the competition after defeating Chippenham Town 3-0 on Saturday.

And yesterday afternoon they were drawn to play three-time semi-finalists Norwich City in the first round.

The visit of the League One giants – fully five leagues above the Somerset outfit – will also mean the biggest payday in Paulton's history.

Meanwhile, Rickie Lambert will be back at the Memorial Stadium next month – looking to fire his former Bristol Rovers team-mates out of the FA Cup. The Pirates were handed a home tie against Southampton in yesterday's first-round draw.

And the pairing comes less than two years after the Scouse marksman captured the national spotlight by knocking the Saints out in the fifth round, scoring the only goal in a game screened live on national TV

The two sides fought out a thrilling League One encounter last month, when Andy Williams' stoppage-time goal earned the Pirates a dramatic last-gasp 3-2 win after twice being behind on their first visit to the St Mary's Stadium.

Bristol Rovers boss Paul Trollope believes the forthcoming showdown could be a cup cracker.

"I'm delighted we've got a home draw," said Trollope. "But of all the possibilities in the first round, we have been given one of the toughest challenges.

"Our game down there a few weeks ago was a great one and this is all set up to be a good cup tie. Southampton have a good side and are in form at the moment."

The tie is expected to take place on November 7 and Trollope added: "People will obviously think about the game here a couple of seasons ago, although that was obviously at a very different stage of the competition.

"But we'll be hoping for another good crowd for what's a very competitive tie. The quality both teams showed in our last game means it should be an entertaining one – and again we'll be looking to win."

Having already banked more than £30,000 from their five game FA Cup run, Paulton manager Andrew Jones and his team will be hoping that Sky confirm that they want to screen the game live to bolster the coffers even further.

Jones, still shocked at drawing the plum tie of the round, said: "I'm shaking from the excitement of it all.

"When we won on Saturday afternoon I said to everyone we were going to meet in the clubhouse for the draw.

"And when I got there Sunday morning the place was absolutely packed – I've never know anything like it.

"There was a real feeling of expectation when the draw started with oohs and aahs as teams were pulled out of the drum. There was a huge cheer when our name was pulled out first and then roof nearly came off when Norwich's name was announced.

"The rest of the draw was just a blur after that and the celebrations went on into the evening."

Rovers have not been tempted to try to re-arrange the game but hope to add temporary stands to their Winterfield Road ground and take the capacity up to 3,500.

Jones said: "We really want to play Norwich at home to give us as much as an advantage as possible.

"We know it will be a tough game but we will be ready for them. The next two weeks will be hectic, to say the least, with everything that needs to be in place for their visit."

This is the first time that Paulton have been in the first round proper of the FA Cup and have already had to win five ties to make it this far.

Their journey began with a 3-1 home win over Bideford, and they then saw off Tiverton Town 1-0, Didcot 2-0 away and Newport County 1-0 before Saturday's defeat of Chippenham.

Jones said: "We've only played one team, Bideford, who were below us and they are the only team to have scored against us.

"All the other ties have been against teams in higher leagues and they have resulted in clean sheets.

"We've got some FA Cup experience in our team, with the likes of Rob Cousins and Alex Ball, who were in Team Bath's recent cup run. But we've packed a lot of experience into this cup run already.

"I can't stress enough just what this means financially to a club like ours. It means that we are financially secure for up the next five years or so.

"We don't pay a great deal in terms of wages to our players, but we do like to look after them off the pitch.

"The club is funded purely through the social side and that is going to have a huge increase over the next few weeks.

"If I'm really honest, I would like us to get a draw so that we can have another payday by going to Carrow Road – but then again, we might win and draw another big club."

“Oh no another season without a chance of a Bristol derby as our blue friends get knocked out before we enter. May be we can have a derby against paulton or bath or forest green good luck to those 3.”
