The only pub in Patchway could be turned into a shop or a restaurant.

The Britannia, on Rodway Road, has been open for more than 50 years and has been owned Enterprise Inns for about 10 years.

Since The Railway pub on the A38 closed about 30 years ago, The Britannia has been the area's only local – but the Evening Post reported last month that there were fears the pub could close.

Now Enterprise Inns have confirmed that they have put it up for sale, at an asking price of £275,000.

Vicky Averis, a spokesperson for Enterprise Inns, would not reveal why the pub had been put on the market but said that Bristol's Christie and Co were handling the sale.

Nick Calfe from Christie and Co said: "The pub has been on the market since April.

"We have had two viewings of it, and both are interested in buying.

"One is a restaurant operation and the other is looking for an alternative use, which we understand could be retail, maybe a convenience store.

"There has been no interest from anyone to keep it as a pub, although the restaurant operator would want to keep a bar.

"Both have made a verbal offer and we are waiting for it in writing. However, as yet the clients have said no to both offers."

Other establishments nearby include the Royal British Legion, Rodway Road, the Labour Club at the Parade and Patchway Sport and Social Club, Coniston Road, all for members only.

Pub regular Bill Skinner, 71, who lives on Coniston Road, said: "I think that most people round here would like to see the building stay open as a pub.

"It is sad, but I think it is inevitable that it will shut. "

Sue Giles, 44, has been landlady since October and she has worked there for about 20 years.

She told the Evening Post last month that she believed the pub was closing because it was not making enough money for Enterprise Inns.

“Britannia, last pub in Patchway? What location then, is the Hungry Horse (formally knon as New Inn, which is on the Gloucester Road, on the corner of Patchway Common?

The very name "Patchway Common" tells you, that it is Patchway. So, Sup your beers up there! There's plenty of room for all those who drink at the Brit, surely? So, what's the problem, if indeed, there is one?

    GD.

P.S. Keep my name anon, thanks!”

“It will be nice to see The Briannia shut down, however, it would be nice to have a pub in Patchway if you are not members of the Legion or the Labour Club. We have to either walk to the Hungry Horse on the A38 or to the Air Balloon in Filton.”
