A woman is holding a day-long fundraising event in memory of her partner, who died during a round-the-world trip.

Lena Liambey and David Lord, who lived in Totterdown, were just two weeks into a seven-month holiday when David died from a heart attack in a remote town in India, aged just 33. In the two years since his death, Lena, 29, has raised almost £20,000 through The David Lord Charitable Trust.

This has paid for an ambulance for the Indian town where he died, funds to keep it running and pay for drivers and a nurse, and an orphanage, which people from the UK can volunteer in.

On Saturday Lena is hosting a fundraiser at Paintworks on Bath Road.

The free event – called Karnataka, after the Indian state where they were staying when David passed away – includes a flea market, hog roast and food hall, face painting, a massage area, Indian dance, art displays, an animation workshop, games, a bar and music from DJ Billy Whizz in the day. The night session, from 7pm, features music from Dr Meaker, KidCarpet, DJ Etikut, Snips and DJ Stuart Sunday.

There are also raffles and prize draws throughout the day, including the chance to win a holiday to Greece and a charity Grand National sweepstake.

Lena, who is now 29 and lives in Athens, said: "The idea behind it all is the memory of my partner, David.

"It has been built on the kindness that the people showed me in India when I was in a really bad situation, and the help received from friends and family when I was back in Bristol.

"It has been a nightmare over the last two years, but I am very pleased that something positive has come out of it."

Tickets are available from Bocabar on Bath Road, or via www.dlct.org.uk.
