Parking chaos has returned to a road outside Frenchay Hospital, just when people living in the area thought it had been solved.

In October the Evening Post reported how drivers leaving their cars on Bristol Road, outside the entrance to the hospital's A&E department, were causing major difficulties.

The parked cars made the road too narrow for two lines of traffic to pass.

Even ambulance drivers answering emergencies had to wait because there was not enough room for them.

Hospital bosses put up signs asking visitors, staff and patients to park with more consideration but when that didn't work, South Gloucestershire Council painted white advisory "keep clear" lines on the road from the hospital entrance northwards to Malmains Drive.

The lines solved the immediate problem but householders say drivers are now leaving their cars on the south side of the entrance towards the mini roundabout where Bristol Road meets Frenchay Park Road and Begbrook Park.

Some motorists are also parking on the opposite side of Bristol Road to the hospital entrance and on the frontage of houses.

Council highways officers are monitoring parking to see if further action is needed and have been in further talks with the hospital.

Bob Pullin, councillor for Frenchay and Stoke Park, said: "The road is better than it used to be since the white line was put down but we are getting problems at the other side of the hospital entrance instead. We are trying to get another line painted where there are now problems."

Janet Wooster, 62, who lives near the hospital and highlighted the original parking problems, said: "On Monday afternoon at about 4pm it was utter chaos.

"There was a bus in the bus stop so no one could move and an ambulance with its lights on couldn't get through."

Joan Eede, of Bristol Road, said: "Mondays are always bad – there seem to be a lot more patients trying to find somewhere to park then."

Simon Wood, director of facilities at the hospital, said: "North Bristol NHS Trust is very pleased the dangerous parking situation surrounding the entrance at Frenchay appears to have been improved by the steps taken, particularly by South Gloucestershire Council.

"However cars occasionally still appear to be parked on other unsuitable areas that are not covered by the white lines.

"We are aware of the problems this is causing and are in contact with South Gloucestershire and Winterbourne councils to resolve the problem."

Mr Wood added parking charges had not changed, nor the number of spaces, so the trust did not know whey more people were parking on the road.

It costs £2 for up to three hours, £4 for three to five hours and £6 for all-day. A weekly pass is £12. Patients and the disabled park for free in designated spaces.

“As I have said before, its nothing to do with parking charges Its the lack of spaces. You have to arrive an hour before visiting times to get a space and sit in your car watching people go round and round looking for a space.”
