Parents reacted with disbelief that telecommunications giant Orange applied to put up a phone mast in Bristol without consulting two nearby schools.

Orange claimed there were no schools within 250m of the proposed site of the 11.8m-high mast in Redland in its planning application to Bristol City Council.

But both Bristol Steiner School and Torwood House Junior School are within 150m of it.

Staff and parents of children at the schools say they were not informed of the proposal and believe the mast could affect pupils' health.

Orange wants to put a lamppost phone mast on the corner of Redland Hill and Durdham Park to improve its network coverage in the Clifton area following the loss of its mast on the Natwest building in Whiteladies Road.

Joel Moreland's six-year-old son Zach goes to Bristol Steiner School, which has 120 pupils aged six to 16 in Redland Hill. He also has a daughter at the school's kindergarten in Cotham.

"We are reasonable people and we all use mobile phones but it doesn't mean you need to put up a mast near two schools," he said.

"There are so many places in Bristol where the masts could go. If we have powerful radiation coming from a mast around the corner, it doesn't fit with the ethos of the school."

Helen Nicholls, the school's administrator, said: "What we've found difficult is that we've had no consultation on this.

"It's a little alarming to think it could have got planning consent and gone up without us knowing about it."

Torwood House Junior School has 50 pupils, aged between seven and 11, in Durdham Park.

Its proprietor, Samantha Packer, said: "We have now prepared a letter to be signed by parents to oppose the plans because it doesn't look like Orange has been through the correct channels.

"As a school we are quite forward thinking but this is a bit different because of the risk of cancer clusters."

Bristol City Council spokeswoman Kate Hartas said Orange made an error in its application, which the council picked up and challenged.

Orange said the schools would be consulted on the plans.

"Based on the mapping software that we use these schools do not show as being within 150m of the proposed site," a spokeswoman said.

"However, in view of people's concerns we will contact both schools in writing.

"On health and safety, our position is informed by the findings of scientific research over the last 40 years and we are satisfied that our masts – operating within national and international guidelines as they do – are safe and do not present a health risk to members of the public."

Orange said the mast on the Natwest building in Whiteladies Road had been removed because the property was being redeveloped and the site had been decommissioned – meaning three ground-based masts, including the one in Redland, were needed to replace it.

"We currently have a very large coverage hole in the area and we have had customer complaints about it," said Orange.

Comments on the plans are being accepted by Bristol City Council until December 9.

“Tony, yes the masts have increased by that amount in the last decade. Would someone who smoked 40 cigarettes a day get lung cancer within 10 years? Yes maybe a few and there would be other ill health symptoms. We are already beginning to see the cancer clusters and ill health around many phone masts which have been in situ for more than a couple of years. Remember it can take up to 20 years to diagnose a malignant solid brain tumour, Research has proved that melatonin, the cancer fighting hormone, is suppressed by phone mast pulsing radiation emissions. Melatonin is mainly produced by the body at night when you are asleep. If the body is not producing enough of this hormone then you are more at risk of getting cancer. Children absorb up to 50% more radiation that adults because their skulls are thinner. That¿s why they are more at risk. Since the introduction of this technology cancer, especially brain tumours, have increased by 40%. The NHS say cancer is now reaching epidemic proportions. I am not saying it's solely due to the phone operators bombarding the public with electro magnetic radiation emissions from phone masts and wifi, but I think it plays a major part. It seems ridiculous and hypocritical to me, when we have a ban on smoking in public places to stop passive smoking, to then irradiate the whole population in a toxic soup of electro magnetic radiation emissions, which, according to many scientists is more dangerous than smoking.

Yes the Univ of Essex study, funded by the phone operators, was interesting. As it was not an independent study one immediately has to be aware of what they are trying to prove and consequently look at the study closely. The study was called "Does Short-Term Exposure to Mobile Phone Base Station Signals Increase Symptoms in Individuals who Report Sensitivity to Electromagnetic Fields". Note the words ¿short term¿. This was not research into the safety of phone masts but a small scale study about people who claim they are electro sensitive. These volunteers were submitted to radiation for 20 minutes! Now remember phone mast emit radiation 24/7. In this study fifty-six electro sensitive volunteers started on the Essex study trials. Twelve had to drop out partway through because they became too ill to continue. These 12 people were then excluded from the study! The phone operators then announced to the media that mobile phone masts were safe and of course the BBC, who have £millions tied up in this technology, duly obliged them with the appropriate headlines. If you want to know more about this study look at the Starweave website. I trust you have looked at the many other independent research studies on the Powerwatch website, the overwhelming majority of which show that this technology is harmful.”

“How dare they situate a mast near fee paying private schools like this! People do not pay money to have their kids brains fried! The council should agree to have them near state schools instead!”

All i do is stand here receiving your data then transmit it to your desired designation.

I could do with a bit of a clean though,,,,(its the birds).”

“The new 3g masts emits much higher levels of microwaves than older masts almost always used and quoted in official figures.

The new UMTS technology uses pulsed microwave signals which are known to have an adverse effect on human cell division leading to symptoms such as nausea, lethargy, sleeplessness, and cancers.

All known mamals are susceptible to 'Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF's) to some extent.

The other problem with 3g is we require more masts to improve the 3G signal, returning to 2g would be a better move if common sense was used not commercial greed to decide what is best”

“J E, You say that mobile phone masts are dangerous and cause ill health. The number of phone masts in the UK have increased by 700% in the last decade - why has there not been a similar increase in the types of illnesses supposedly caused by them?

Another question. In a survey conducted by the University of Essex and described by Powerwatch as "one of the best designed and executed studies to date" it was found that individuals who reported themselves as suffering from ill-effects from radio waves when the transmitters were on, also reported those ill-effects when they were just told the transmitters were on but in fact were not. In essence, their symptoms were self-induced.

It is the same effect that makes placebos such a powerful weapon in the GP's armoury.”

“Agree that parents who buy mobile phones for their kids (against HPA safety advice) are hypocrites. However if you want the truth about the harmful effects of this technology go to the Powerwatch and Mast Sanity websites. Over 2000 independent studies, linking phone mast electro magnetic radiation with serious ill health including cancer, confirm that phone masts should not be sited within 350 metres of schools or housing. Phone operators dismiss such research, alleging that the research they fund suggest their are no health risks. However last year the national press revealed that the phone operators covered up the damaging results of their own research. The Ecolog Institute, a research organisation which examines the health effects of mobile phones, was commissioned to investigate the possible health risks of mobile phone masts. The 2003 Ecolog report confirmed:

'Given the results of the present epidemiological studies, it can be concluded that electromagnetic fields with frequencies in the mobile telecommunications range do play a role in the development of cancer. This is particularly notable for tumours of the central nervous system.'

Does this suggest that phone mast radiation emissions "do not present a health risk to members of the public"?

I see Orange are trying to persuade us that these mast microwave emissions are safe because they comply with International Guidelines. So thats ok then is it? No! These international guidelines were only designed for one thing. To protect the Industry and their profits! The ICNIRP international guidelines, trumpeted by government and phone operators as providing protection to the general public from phone mast radiation emissions, were introduced in 1992 in the technology's infancy. They were introduced not by scientists, but by technicians. They completely ignored researching the most damaging effects to the human body of these radiation emissions, i.e. measuring the biological, vibrational effects on the human body and damage to cells. They only researched the thermal (heating) effects of the emissions on dead meat! This absurdity is all that stands between us and the risk of life threatening or chronic disease. These (ICNIRP) guidelines as 'protection' are equivalent to a fireguard in front of a defective gas fire that is emitting carbon monoxide - it might stop you getting burned but you might not be alive to care!”

“@tony: well I couldn't have said it better: "see just how much they are actually spending on trying to find nothing!".
There is a large body of consistent scientific evidence showing that mobile-phone radiation is a biological hazard.
If you want popcorn then go to the movies and there you'll most likely to find your alleged "no risk" evidence as well. Tony, the assurances you hear about the safety of mobiles are as scripted as a Hollywood flick. No amount of anonymous Orange or T-mobile spokespersons, repeatingly quoting nameless "international bodies" to journalists, can make the existing evidence go away. To put it into perspective: most of the WHO's INTERPHONE studies now show increased cancer risk from mobiles and ten out of fourteen existing studies on people near masts show both short and long term adverse health effects.”
