Jo Bray and Helen Parker will embark on the six-day challenge in April for causes close to their heart.

Miss Bray, of Bradley Stoke, is the Bristol branch chairwoman and trustee for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, a charity she is passionate about because her mother has leukaemia.

Having been involved with fundraising for the charity for several years, Miss Bray felt the time had come for her to tackle her own challenge for the cause and she was inspired to cycle when she heard of a 17-year-old who cycled from London to Lisbon.

When she started training for the challenge the 37-year-old said she could "just about ride a bike" but is now cycling about 100 miles a week in preparation for the challenge, which will see her riding between 45 and 70 miles a day on tough terrain.

Miss Bray, a graphic designer, said: "I am quite excited, but this is the first time I will have been anywhere as far afield and I am also a bit scared.

"My mum got leukaemia and I found this charity were the ones that did the research into the drug she is taking.

"I feel like this charity is doing so much work on research to try and cure blood cancers."

Ms Parker, of Horfield, is cycling for Cancer Research UK to help their work in trying to find a cure for the disease in memory of her father Andrew, who passed away in 2011.

The mental health liaison nurse cycles to work and has previously done the Action 100 cycle ride from Bristol to London.

"My dad always travelled the world and China was one of the places he went to and got photos," the 32-year-old said.

"I did wonder if I could find some of the places he went to and get photos there."

The pair have been training for the challenge together since they found out they would be taking part in April.

“There is no doubting that Cancer Research is worthy cause but surely more money could be raised if sponsored bicycle ride were undertaken in the UK, saving the cost of getting to and from China?

I would feel like I was sponsoring someone to go on holiday.

    Good luck, Jo and Helen!”
