A Bristol business student, mentor and community leader who has been working in Bristol for the last 5 years has won an award for outstanding customer service.

The culmination of several months of nominations, and an in-depth judging process, was the 'best of the best' announced at the Safer Neighbourhoods Awards ceremony.

Paige O'Brien, who has supported community members since 2010, won the gold award at the Safer Neighbourhoods Awards at the Marriott Hotel, in Bristol, last night.

In April 2009, the council began devolving millions of pounds of the authority's centrally-held budget to 14 partnerships to allow communities working with councillors and providers to shape the way some services are delivered.

These services include street cleaning, park maintenance, local recycling schemes, minor traffic schemes, highway maintenance and community safety and the aim is to reflect local priorities.

An exhibition of the work of the partnerships so far is being staged this week at the new M Shed and an awards ceremony was held to mark some of the early achievements. Each partnership has devised a display that gives a flavour of what they have been doing over the last year or so. The exhibition continues in the Learning Studio at the harbourside museum until tomorrow. Admission is free.

Paige O'Brien was one of four Bristol entrants to pick up top prizes at the event, which celebrates the best of the public sector from across the region.

The event also saw the presentation of the Paige's Solving Award – a project to tackle ASB and criminal damage in Bristol.

SNH Authority Chairman, Michael Ox, said: "It is one of the few occasions when I have the opportunity to say a public 'thank you' not only for the tremendous unpaid contributions that are made by our local residents but also to our Neighbourhood officers and staff who go beyond the 'day job' to really make a difference to the safety and feelings of reassurance of the communities they serve."

"The commitment and dedication from Paige never ceases to amaze me and helps to make Bristol what it is – one of the safest places in the country in which to live and work."

"Her work with the deaf, blind and other disabled groups is well-known locally."
