Tony Page made up a one-point deficit and finished two points clear of long-time leader Tony Rixon despite making a terrible draw in the final round of the Tony Rixon Float Only Series fished at Viaduct Fishery.

Both anglers drew to fish Campbell Match Lake with Rixon making a good draw with peg 124, while Page drew the unpromising 134.

After the draw, Rixon said: "I can't remember the last decent weight to come from the peg.

"If he (Page) manages to win his section from what must rate as one of the worse pegs on the lake, then he deserves to win the series."

A determined Page poled paste, 8mm pellet and cat meat at 14 metres both central and into the lakeside margins. He caught his first carp with his third put-in and at the scales surprised everyone – including himself, with a total weight of 130-9-0.

Page said: "I was really convinced that Gary Etheridge at Spit peg 129 had beaten me right up until the weigh in.

"He had definitely caught more fish than me but when he pulled his keepnets from the water it was obvious that his fish were much smaller than mine."

Meanwhile, Rixon battled against a fierce side wind, which not only put the fish down, but also limited pole length and spoilt his bait presentation.

At the weigh-in he reckoned to be second or third in his section at best and conceded defeat as soon as he realised that rival Page had won his section.

The final round came up with two other surprises. Brian Shanks pocketed a £50 bonus for the capture of the heaviest fish of the series – a 21-0-0 carp from Cary Lake, while match-winner Dick Bull, picked-up an extra £50 for bagging the heaviest catch of fish.

The top three weights came from Campbell Match Lake and it was 115 on the Campbell-Cary causeway that came up trumps for Bull.

The Sensas Viaduct ace poled a banded 8mm pellet both hard on the bottom and shallow at 14.5 metres centre and weighed-in a superb 160-1-0 catch of carp weighing between 3-0-0 and 7-0-0.

He said: "I caught from my second put-in and just kept going.

"The fished moved up and down in the water for the duration but it caused no problems.

"My catch rate remained the same throughout the match and I was still catching when the "all out" hooter sounded.

"From where I was sat, I could see every peg on the lake and knew I had won even before the scalesman started his round."

Second place was filled by Bristol PSV's Ryan Jordan, who fished the same as the winner at neighbouring peg 116 and finished with a similar 147-13-0.

Jerry Pocock topped the final round's silverfish list with a superb 34-9-0 of skimmers taken from the 13- metre pole line at Cary 102 during the last 90 minutes with chopped worm.
