“There was severe congestion. The oubound bus services 1 and 54 could get no further than Temple Gate as Cattle Market Road, the diversionary route, was too low for double-deckers through the tunnel under Temple Meads.
Lots of people walking home up the Wells Road at teatime having abandoned their buses at Temple Gate. At least one 54 travelling from Cribbs Causeway to Stockwood was routed via Easton and Bath Road to avoid the chaos in the Temple area.
An articulated lorry had overturned in the slip road leading from Clarence Road to the A4 spilling its load of gravel or chippings onto the carriageway.”
