RECYCLING rates have gone up and the amount of waste going into landfill sites has fallen since the system of collecting rubbish in South Gloucestershire was overhauled.

Figures covering the first full year of the revamped system show the amount of waste sent to rubbish tips fell from more than 68,000 tonnes to just over 33,000 tonnes per year.

South Gloucestershire Council also said 54 per cent of household waste was being re-used, recycled or composted, beating the 45 per cent achieved in the previous year.

Among the changes made in November 2010 was the introduction of a weekly food waste and fortnightly plastic bottle collections.
