Overflow pipe leaves hill covered in thick ice
An overflow pipe from the Bush pub on the Wells Road, Totterdown, has created treacherous conditions for Totterdown residents. Water has frozen creating around 20 foot of thick ice on the pavement on County Street, to the rear of the pub, one of the steepest hills in Bristol.
I feel let down by everyone. The pub for leaving the water to flow 24/7 for days, despite the very public warning that temperatures were going to plummit. And for leaving thick ice on the public highway and pavement, leaving residents of all ages to negotiate the dangerous conditions.
I feel let down by the council highways department. I reported the highways issue on Wednesday and haven't heard anything since. When I rang to ask when an officer would be going to look at it they said it would take up to five days. They also said a local resident needs to grit the pavement themselves.
I feel let down by my local councillor Mark Bailey and the Neighbourhood Partnership, both of whom I've contacted about it and neither have responded.
Meanwhile the pathway and part of the road on one of the steepest hills in a busy residential street in Bristol remains covered in thick ice while noone does anything.

“Is this still frozen? Someone from the pub had better totter down and thaw it out. They clearly couldn't organise a booze-up in a brewery. It's the start of the slippery slope.”

“less than half the pavement and not enough of the road to even inconvenience cyclists - what is all the fuss about for crying out loud?! Do you all know every time your overflow is overflowing? probably not - so, it froze - Step over it - there's no need to cross over - its pathetic the fuss made over nothing!!!”

“Moss Rogers, I understand that the owners of the pub were visited by a local councillor and it was sorted as soon as humanly possible, I myself, SAW the road closed and warning signs and as for not hearing from the councillors, perhaps you should check your spam filters as our ward is exceptionally lucky as so much good has been done locally!! Our local councillers deserve a medal for all the good they do our local area. Sounds like sour grapes to me! But as I said already glad it's now all sorted. from a local resident living next to the pub!!!”

“What do you expect them to do? Grit the road themselves? Being a councillor is a part time job, not that you'd know it from the huge amount of work they do. The council is also incredibly bureaucratic. It can take ages to fix things sometimes, and often requires that the councillor chase people up repeatedly. It is more than likely that it is being dealt with, but it's just taken a while.
If it is such a problem for you, why don't you get a shovel and grit the road yourself. As the pub is causing the problem I'm sure they'd be glad to help with some community spirit. Oh, and Moss Rogers, my road not far from the pub had a 'no entry' sign put at the top and guess what? Some helpful citizen moved it. Just because you can't see it in the picture, doesn't mean one wasn't put there.”

."Totterdownkid
Did the pub go 'out of their way to fix the problem'?
What did they do about the 20 foot of ice on a public highway? Did they attempt to sort it out? No, they didn't. They left someone else to tidy up their mess, and that is not on.
Would you leave water to flow, causing 20 feet of ice on the public highway and leave it for someone else to clean up? I certainly wouldn't. No good neighbour would."
.I expect there were lots of burst pipes around with ice on roads etc, in essexthere was flooding and houses evacuated, dont expect joe public could do anything about it.”

'signs went up warning of the danger' - really? I never saw them and can you see them in the photos because I certainly can't.
Personally, I have never heard ANYONE refer to Mark Bailey and Alf Havvock in those terms, although I have heard some people speak well of them, and others not.”

“@ moss Rogers! What did you expect local councillors to do? The road was already gritted signs went up warning of the danger, - probably due to the diligence of local council, the other side was safe and the pub did apparently contact the brewery to sort it out. I have nothing bt admiration for local council workers Alf and Mark Baily - also known locally as the heros of Totterdown and Windmill Hill. Perhaps we should blame the weather centre or the weather itself. Clearing it was pointless until the problem was fixed, else it would have just refrozen!!!!! All sorted now!!”
