Elmlea Infant School in Westbury-on-Trym is celebrating its second "outstanding" Ofsted inspection in three years.

Inspectors who visited the 270-pupil school in March praised the progress children make through the school, which enables many to reach exceptionally high standards.

They said that in spite of the excellent track record, Elmlea Infant was not complacent but was determined to improve even further.

Bristol now has 25 primary schools or nurseries rated outstanding by the independent inspection body.

The Ofsted report said: "Pupils throughout the school benefit from a rich range of experiences in lessons and additional activities such as visits and special events. As a result, they thrive both academically and personally.

"The curriculum is of exceptional quality so that pupils' interest is engaged and extended.

"Teaching is characterised by high expectations and a good level of challenge."

The inspectors praised the high quality of pupils' art work and said music was given high status.

They were also impressed by excellent attendance figures, which they said were thanks to hard work to discourage families from taking holiday in term time.

"Behaviour in lessons is often exemplary and the vast majority of pupils also behave well in the rather cramped conditions in the playground," the report notes.

Lead inspector Shirley Billington said provision for the reception class pupils had improved significantly since the last inspection so that children had access to an exciting range of experiences.

Headteacher Inge Fey said: "Our great strength is the Elmlea team's commitment and dedication to improving outcomes for our children. We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the hard work of our children, staff, governors and parents, and very proud of this achievement for Elmlea Infant School."

Chairwoman of governors Yvonne Craggs said: "The governors are very proud to be part of the team which has achieved such a high standard.

"We are looking forward to our involvement as Elmlea continues to develop and progress.

"The report noted that the use of information and communication technology could be expanded and the school has already put a plan in place for the development of learning opportunities for all children."
