Outspoken youngsters will be in the spotlight at council
WANTED – young people with strong opinions.
A special event in Bristol next week will highlight three groups of youngsters who are already making the movers and shakers sit up and take notice.
They will tell some of the city's most influential people how they have done it – and they want other youngsters with views on all sorts of subjects to join them.
The meeting next Monday at Bristol's Council House on College Green will hear from:
Writers from the Evening Post's Banter magazine, representing students from more than 20 schools in and around Bristol. The monthly publication includes creative and thought-provoking work on lots of subjects by some of the best prospective journalists in the city. They will describe how they have done it.
The Children in Care Council – 10-15 teenagers who meet monthly to talk about the issues that matter to children in care. What they talk about is sent to the managers at Bristol City Council who make big decisions about children in care.
The Bristol Youth Select Committee and UK Parliament members, who are elected and who campaign on issues such as bus transport and homophobic bullying. They meet with decision-makers at a local and national level and try to shape policies on these and other topics.
The event, called Leading for change – voices of young people, takes place on Monday, July 19, from 5-7.30pm at the Council House on College Green.
It is run by nexusbristol, an initiative of the University of Bristol which gives open forums to leaders working for young people across the city. Refreshments will be available and those wishing to attend should phone Mary O'Connell on 0117 331 4302 or email mary.oconnell@bristol.ac.uk.
