Former Bristol city councillor turned opera star Paul Potts is in training for a charity walk from South Wales to London.

The 2007 Britain's Got Talent winner is due to walk from his home in Port Talbot to London in time for his appearance at the SOS Children benefit concert Classic Response at the Royal Albert Hall on April 3. Money raised will go towards helping orphans in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake.

Millionaire tenor Mr Potts, who worked at Tesco in Eastville before he found global success, said: "When I was asked to take part in Classic Response for SOS Children's efforts in Haiti, I said count me in.

"The cause has since become my own which is why I've chosen to conduct my own fund-raising walk in the hope that, with our combined efforts, we can raise the funds required to help the orphans of Haiti with the medical care, food and education."

With the 190-mile walk due to begin on March 18, Mr Potts is now training and is walking an average of 30 miles per day.

Once he reaches Heathrow Airport, he will be taking a detour – via Seoul, South Korea – where he will star in a televised concert before returning to continue the remainder of his walk.

Mr Potts hopes to raise £20,000 and has appealed for support through www.justgiving.com/PottsyWalks.
