Totterdown's Front Room Art Trail takes place this weekend with highlights including a street party, belly dancing and children's entertainment.

Front Room 2009 is a quirky art trail that celebrates Bristol art and design from the abstract to the figurative, and has nearly 200 artists, 60 venues and more than 4,000 visitors.

Started in 2001, Front Room was the first art trail to appear in Bristol and its success has prompted a wave of similar trails across the city.

Visitors are invited to visit artists in their own homes, with other venues in Totterdown hosting all sorts of entertainment.

On Friday the front rooms open from 6pm-9pm and on Saturday and Sunday from noon-6pm.

There will be a street party in Henry Street from noon to late on Saturday, with a marquee, a 30-piece Bhangra band and performances from musicians and DJs. Ale from Bristol Beer Factory will be on offer, as well as belly dancing and drama workshops, children's face painting, and totem pole building.

There will also be street performers and stalls, and refreshments at local pubs and restaurants.

Joining the arts trail for the first time this year is the Teenage Arts Project.

Co-ordinators Lou Boyce, 42, and Lizzy Beech, 34, set up the project to encourage teens in Totterdown to take part in weekly art workshops.

Six weeks of hard work has resulted in a gallery show in the garage around the back of the Oxford pub on Oxford Street. Work done by the teenagers will be on display and will be for sale with all proceeds going back into the project for next year.

Miss Beech said: "Since the YMCA closed, the teenagers who went there have been kicking about on the streets. We've had a positive response to the project but I think it will be a slow burner."

Mrs Boyce said: "We hope we've inspired future artists for art trails to come."

Jon Evans, 42, new landlord at the Oxford, is also hosting five other artists in the pub during the trail.

Mr Evans said: "I want this to be a community pub."

The opening night party on Friday takes place at the Thunderbolt.

Nearly 200 artists will display their work in various venues in the area, which will all be transformed into impromptu galleries offering a chance for artists and visitors to chat and enjoy art in a relaxed environment.
