Open is a closed book as golfers fail to qualify
Bristol's Chris Wood failed to qualify for this year's Open, coming in joint ninth at the local qualifying event at St Anne's Old Course yesterday.
With only the top three guaranteed a place at nearby Royal Lytham & St Anne's later this month, Wood was handily placed after a first round four-under par 68. But a second round one-over par 73 saw him fail to secure a spot which would have seen him join the world's golfing elite for the third major of the season.
The news was just as grim for Bristol's other professional golfer, Chris Lloyd, who was attempting to qualify at Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club. Also needing a top-three finish, the Kendleshire player recorded a sparkling first round 68 which saw Lloyd in joint third place at the halfway stage with four birdies and no dropped shots.
But Lloyd who plays on the Challenge Tour carded a horrendous second round nine-over par 81and his Open dreams disappeared for another year.
