CHILDREN and young people took to the streets this week armed with black bags and litter pickers to clean up Kingsmeadow estate in Kingswood.

And after all their hard work, they were treated to an Olympic themed sports event.

The event was organised by the Kingsmeadow Community and funded by Merlin Housing Society, Guinness and Knightstone Housing Association. South Gloucestershire Council's Street care team also got involved to clear fly-tipped items and Merlin arranged for four skips to be set up for local residents to dispose of unwanted items.

Merlin's housing officer for the area, Zalika Fanty, said: "The day was a great success. The children had a great time both at the sports event and picking the litter.

"The skips were well used by local residents and when we left, the area looked spotless. It was great to see the community come together and take pride in the area. Everyone involved deserves a pat on the back."

This event is part of a series of neighbourhood community action days that the society runs every year. These events are designed to give people an opportunity to get involved in their local community and improve their neighbourhoods.

“I wager that the people clearing up the mess were not those who created it (especially the fly tipping).”
