Old-school space rock
CAP'N Dave Brock of Hawkwind runs a notoriously tight ship, which is why there are enough former members of the band to populate several spin-off groups.
This latest incarnation of Hawklords, a named coined in 1978 when Hawkwind weren't legally permitted to call themselves Hawkwind, currently features just one original Hawklord: keyboardist Harvey Bainbridge. On vocals is Ron Tree, who fronted Hawkwind during their ill-advised '90s ravey-davey period.
Given that a ragbag of ex-Hawkwind members from different eras promises little more than a jolly evening's nostalgia, the surprise is just how good they are. They deliver a generous two hour set of old-school space rock with a punch that Hawkwind sometimes lack, accompanied by a suitably retina-melting light show.
Mr Tree, has evolved into quite an impressive frontman, while guitarist Jerry Richards puts the riffs upfront where they belong rather than swathing them in layers of keyboards.

Rob Calvert provided Hawkwind with their wittiest and most literate lyrics. His satirical Uncle Sam's on Mars is newly topical, while The Aerospaceage Inferno from his Captain Lockheed solo album proves a real treat. The new Hawklords material is more of a mixed bag, though the epic Mothership stands proud alongside classics such as Master of the Universe.
