The Old Vic was packed when it re-opened last night for the premiere of Catherine Johnson's new play Suspension.

The internationally acclaimed playwright wrote the play especially for the theatre where she began her career 21 years ago.

Clifton Suspension Bridge provides the backdrop for Suspension which is described as a hard-edged comedy.

It features two fathers who stage a traffic-stopping demonstration of love.

Tickets for Friday, Saturday and Tuesday's performances sold out quickly.

Ms Johnson won a writing competition with her first play Rag Doll, in 1988.

She went on to become the theatre's writer in residence and over the years has continued to write and stage plays there.

Her most recent success was the hit film Mamma Mia! for which she wrote the script.

Suspension runs at the Old Vic until Saturday March 28. For tickets call 0117 987 7877.
