Old Reds' Owen: I'm stepping down as captain
Jason Owen is to quit as Old Redcliffians' skipper after only one season.
Prop Owen will lead Reds out for the last time when they host Intermediate Cup finalists and Western Counties North champions Hartpury College on Saturday week.
Owen said: "I'm stepping down as captain.
"I'm not the right man for the job. There are other people who can be more beneficial to the team.
"I think I can be better for Reds by not being captain and concentrating on my own game."
Reds lost 27-24 at home to Stroud on Saturday despite holding a healthy 12-point lead at the break.
Tries were scored by Dave Jones, Craig Lancastle, Joe Woodward and Paul Wales. Craig Owen hit two conversions.
The home side were let down by poor discipline and had props Luke Summerfield and Jason Owen sin-binned within minutes of each other, which allowed Stroud back in the match.
Reds were due to play yesterday at home to Chosen Hill but the Gloucester side awarded the game to their Bristol rivals.
The Brislington side can still finish third, but must beat Hartpury College, who have lost only one league match in the last five years, and hope Barton Hill, North Bristol and Stroud lose.
Thornbury recorded their maiden away victory of the campaign when wing Dan Hussey grabbed a hat-trick of tries in the 34-0 win at Widden.
The win moved the club up to seventh.
Hussey opened the scoring with a try following a deft Simon Weaver kick behind the defence.
Close to half time, Widden failed to deal with a high kick and Tom Guzman raced in from the 10-metre line to score a try, which Weaver converted.
From the restart, Ollie Fleming split the Widden defence to put Wayne Underwood in close to the corner and Thornbury led 17-0 at the break.
Ten minutes after the restart, Adam Hodgkins created Hussey's second try.
Thornbury's tails were up and Hodgkins and Fleming were involved in creating a try for Sam Olde, Matt Belbin converting from the touchline.
Hussey completed his hat-trick late in the game, kicking ahead and gathering the ball to score.
Old Bristolians have clinched fourth place in Gloucester One after beating Brockworth 51-22.
They cannot be caught by Chipping Sodbury, who won 22-20 at Dursley to bring their league programme to a close.
Tries came from Phil Player, Steven Hopes and Bernard McMullan.
Steve Romanowski landed two conversions and a penalty despite struggling with a tight hamstring.
