Old Bristolians/Westbury's King aims to get amongst the leaders
Old Bristolians Westbury have clinched their target of two wins from their opening two matches – tomorrow they travel to Bristol & North Somerset title rivals Frenchay.
The Failand club, who were in Premier Two in 2005, hope to climb back up the leagues after two years in West of England Premier League's fourth tier.
They finished second behind title winners Bedminster last summer, but this term has started well with the side avenging defeats against Hambrook and Shirehampton.
Greg Malkin's 4-17 help put Hambrook to the sword in a six- wicket victory before overseas player Travis Townsend and Alex Harris hit 55 and 71 respectively in the 98-run win against Shirehampton.
"We have started well," said captain James King. "We had two tough games against Hambrook and Shirehampton but, in the end, we had two fairly comfortable victories.
"They were two sides we lost to last season. The key for us this summer is to turn around some of the defeats from last year.
"We targeted these two matches. We have won both matches and gained some valuable points.
"I was happy with last season, but we lost concentration in two or three matches and didn't do ourselves justice. We would have liked to be closer to Bedminster.
"Bedminster were a strong side last season. But I don't think anyone will run away with the league this year.
"We want to be there or thereabouts come the last half-a-dozen matches and then push on."
But King believes Frenchay, who have also won their opening two matches, will offer the first real test for his side.
He added: "It will be a competitive match. We haven't played Frenchay for a number of years, but we know of some of their players.
"We have come across Mike Donaldson playing for Bedminster last year and we have also faced Wayne Kylander when he was at Winterbourne. We know of their strengths.
"The key for us is stop their big guns from firing. Frenchay will probably be one of the strongest sides in the division.
"They are a big club and played in Premier One not so long ago – they are very keen to get back there.
"We've also spent some time in Premier Two. We would like to get back up the league ladder.
"We are expecting a tough match. It's a real test to see how far we have come and progressed from last year."
Old Bristolians/Westbury have seen an almost instant return from their overseas player Townsend, who is from Cape Town, but attached to Western Province.
