A Horfield road has had to be cleaned twice after a "nuisance neighbour" allowed oil to leak onto the highway.

Residents in Darnley Avenue have complained to the council after the spill, from a garage in the road, has left their street and nearby Parkstone Avenue and Muller Road in a hazardous condition.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said they believed the owner of the garage did not live in the road but used the property to store large oil drums.

They said: "The garden is saturated and vehicles drip oil. Drains are blocked and there often is an awful smell. We end up treading in the oil and walking it into our homes, not to mention how dangerous it is for drivers.

"It shows a total lack of regard for the neighbourhood."

Horfield Liberal Democrat councillor Cheryl Ann said she had received numerous complaints from residents which had led to her contacting the council enforcement team and waste services.

Council spokeswoman Catherine Frankpitt said: "Following a number of complaints, city council enforcement officers visited the garage on Darnley Avenue to carry out an inspection and speak to the tenant of the garage premises producing the biofuel.

"The quantity of oil being stored on the land does not require a licence, however the spillages onto the highway have required cleansing on two occasions.

"The person has been informed in writing by the council's highways team he will be receiving the invoices for these clean-ups. Officers will continue to investigate and monitor the situation."

The Evening Post was unable to trace the garage owner for comment.
