A NURSERY in Lawrence Weston has been classed as "outstanding" by the watchdog Ofsted.

Bluebell Valley Nursery School provides for 80 three- and four-year-olds.

It also has a resource centre for 16 children aged up to seven with severe learning difficulties.

The Ofsted report said that although the youngsters have few skills expected for their age group, they make considerable progress because of excellent teaching.

The inspectors found that children are inspired and motivated by their lessons.

"Staff know their children exceptionally well," the report said.

"The children listen exceptionally well for their age and are becoming confident learners."

Lead inspector Christine Huard praised acting head Jo Jackson for outstanding leadership at a time of uncertainty for the nursery.

The city council wants to merge the nursery with Weston Park Primary School in 2010.

Acting deputy head Jill Williams said: "We are delighted with the recognition from Ofsted of the commitment of everyone who is connected with the nursery.

"It was great to have the opportunity to share all the exciting things that we do in the nursery and the excellent progress that all children make during their time at Bluebell Valley.

"As we enter a new phase in the development of the nursery we can now do so with great confidence and commitment to ensure that outstanding provision will continue to be provided for future generations of children."

Chairman of governors Dr Bob Heath said: "This report is a true reflection of the hard work, planning and commitment which goes into the children's education and the vocation, skill and dedication of all the school staff.

"The next two years are going to be challenging ones for Bluebell Valley with the impact of amalgamation and a review of the funding of early years education by the local authority.

"Staff and governors hope that, despite all the changes, nursery education for children in Lawrence Weston will remain outstanding."
