PROTESTERS from the Occupy Bristol movement have asked Bristol Cathedral if they can hold a public meeting there to discuss their future.

A meeting was held yesterday between some protesters, council leader Barbara Janke and the Dean of the cathedral the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle.

The protesters, who want to hold a public consultation to discuss their tactic of camping on College Green, asked Mrs Janke if they could hold it in the council house.

When she said that would not be possible, they asked the Dean if he might be able to help.

Dr Hoyle, pictured, told the Evening Post: "They asked if they could use the cathedral.

"I said that would be a chapter decision – the chapter being the governing body of the cathedral, made up of myself and three other clergy members as well as four lay members.

"I said I would take it to the chapter, and we next meet on Wednesday, November 30.

"But I told them there are issues with this, now that they have a history of occupying spaces."

In a statement on their website, the protesters said: "We were pleased that the Dean, indicated he would look into the possibility of using part of the cathedral building to host this meeting.

"We thank the Dean for being open to this possibility."

They said they also discussed a number of other local issues with the council, including whether their community asset transfer process is fit for purpose given that 200 council properties remain empty.

They also brought to their attention the actions of Edinburgh City Council in voting to publicly support the aims and sentiments of the global occupy movement.

The protesters have said they are willing to listen to people who have criticised their methods of protesting through the city centre camp.

They hope that a public meeting will allow them to take on fresh ideas so they can "continue to build [their] movement and advance [their] arguments without continuing to camp on College Green".

    “Interesting point, smoosername..

I think the Easter bunny and Father christmas would be on the side of the corporate greed types. It would be in their interests to generate profits and keep them in a job..”

“Jesus has become one of the richest Corporate brands in the world, the church is the richest corporate property and land owners so why are Occuppy siding with them......Oh thats right that have lost their true direction but Occupiers have put down the rich in quotes etc. So why are the church not in the 99%?”

    “@acjboyle

Oh dear, you really have become divorced from reality.

Maybe you're not aware of this but religion can't even agree on interpretations of their own books. Take the CofE: women priests, homosexuals, same sex marriges, even priests who've said they don't believe in God. And you think the church will band together with Occupiers who can't even agree what they want?

    For the good of man...
When you say that, I gather you mean your own biased concept of goodness.

Some bankers/financiers/individuals are w**nkers, that is true. But they are in the minority. You however want to make generalisations about whole groups of people, ummm, are you a bigot?”

“I bet the bankers are mocking the tax paying general public when they run off to the bahamas, funded by the government bail outs as bonuses..

Nope, I see the church and these protesters should be uniting against the evil that lurks in our society..

    for the good of man.”

    “@acjboyle

I suspect there is the public facing side of Occupiers who seek to remind christians of their duty and ask 'what would Jesus do' but who sneer and mock christian values in private. What is amusing is that they seem to think they are experts on the christian faith having spent some time on Google.

As an athiest, I find it amusing that the church is getting rings run round it by occupiers who probably don't even believe in Jesus.

Some interesting weather on the way. There is nothing like being outside when the weather turns cold and wet, it chills to the bone and when there is no respite, you sure do get miserable. Maybe they should have put a space heater on their Christmas list from Amazon.”

“Jesus would be on the side of the occupiers and NEVER on the side of the greedy bankers, government pandering to the bankers...

Of course the church will welcome in the occupiers. I hope they do, too.”

“The council and the cathedral should refuse any further dialogue. Let them stay out in the cold while public opinion continues to grow against them. They'll soon leave with their tales between their legs.”
