Nuclear option is the only real choice
THERE will always be a divide within the great British public over the wisdom of using nuclear energy as the nation's primary power source. On a smaller local scale those very same concerns are being echoed around South Gloucestershire and, specifically, the village of Oldbury-on-Severn, following the announcement that Hitachi will build a new nuclear power plant there.
This vast construction project, along the banks of the Severn, will create a massive jobs boost for the area, allied with a huge fillip for the local economy.
Safety, of course, must be paramount. Yet opponents will, doubtless, despair at the creation of a fuel source which is unwieldy, difficult to tame and downright dangerous when things go horribly wrong.
But the truth is that other energy sources, such as wind turbines, are just bit players in the game of power generation when compared with nuclear. That's why the Government is opting for it.

If they do nothing, they know there's a risk the UK's lights will go out. Or we find ourselves as a nation reliant on energy supplies from other nations who could hold us to economic ransom – or worse. So, on balance, for the sake of the nation, and in the absence of a genuine alternative, this plan for Oldbury will have to be embraced by us all.
