Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar could be turning out for Winterbourne United in the GFA Trophy after the non-league side put in an approach for the 52-year-old.

New manager Nicky Tanner used to play with the Zimbabwean international at Liverpool in the early 1990s and has put his connections to good use.

The Bristolian defender made his name at Bristol Rovers before getting a dream move to Anfield and has been a friend of Grobbelaars for 20 years.

And when he heard the former top flight keeper might be down in the West Country on the weekend of Winterbourne's Trophy tie against Patchway, he gave him a call.

Tanner told the Evening Post: "I spoke to him today. He's moving to Canada so he's got a few things to sort out but hopefully he'll be able to come down. We've put in notice to get him to play."

Grobbelaar has been turning out for the Liverpool legends side and last played properly for Northern League side Glasshoughton Welfare.

The Hellenic League club want to field the 52-year-old in their home cup tie on December 5 and to help raise some money for their South Gloucestershire ground.

Tanner said: "Bruce has been good as gold. We haven't got a budget and the whole aim is to raise a few quid for the club.

"I only took charge of training for the first time last week and there's some good young players. If Bruce is there he'll give the young lads a boost. It's not a publicity stunt, I genuinely want him to play.

"I can't guarantee it yet but we're not saying buy a ticket in advance or anything," he added. "Bruce just needs to tie up some loose ends before he can confirm."

Grobbelaar won six league titles and three FA Cup winner's medals with Liverpool in 14 years at the club and is probably best known for his wobbly legs during a penalty shoot-out in the 1984 European Cup final against Roma which Liverpool won.

Chairman Robyn Maggs told the Post: "I said to Nicky, 'what are you talking about? Can't you get Rush and Dalglish as well?' I did question him myself.

"It would be fantastic for the club though. I've been chairman for 18 years, we've had a lot of highs but nothing quite like this."
