AFTER 40 years as Enmore Park's professional, Bristol-born Nigel Wixon has been honoured at a special dinner in the clubhouse attended by more than 110 members, officials, past captains and PGA professionals.

Wixon, 63, was introduced to golf at Filton by his father who worked at Rolls Royce and was captain of the Rolls Royce Golf Society. His first job was as assistant to Richard Bradbeer, a member of the famous Burnham-on-Sea golfing family who was then the Bristol and Clifton club pro.

"I used to cycle each day from Henbury, where we lived," he recalled. After four years, he accompanied Bradbeer to Burnham and Berrow in 1969 and became PGA-qualified a year later.

Bradbeer, now 75, was professional at Royal Birkdale for 21 years, and made the journey from Lancashire to pay tribute to his former assistant.

European Seniors Tour player Andrew Sherborne won his first West Region pro-am of the season with an astonishing back nine of 29 at Weston-super-Mare, including six birdies over the final seven holes.

His putting left his opponents floundering on a rare dry day over the links course and he returned a six-under-par 64 for a three-shot win.

Despite his European commitments, he is always willing to support regional events. This was his sixth appearance of the year in the pro-am organised by club professional Mike La Band in aid of the club captain Mark Short's charity, Children's Hospice South West.

Andrew March (Brean), who led the winning team of Eamonn Wynne, Dave Bradley and Matt Haskins with 15-under-par 125, was fourth. Home assistant Nathan Bateman's Weston-super-Mare trio of Carl Hall, Dan Hewlett and Sam Fearnley were third.
