ATHLETICS: For Matt Newman persistence finally paid off at the 10th Easy Runner Sodbury Slog.

The 34-year-old triathlete, from Brislington, had never made the top three before, despite numerous attempts – he finished eighth, sixth and seventh in the previous three years, so he was delighted to mark the unveiling of the new course with a handsome victory.

"I have done the race quite a few times and probably only missed one or two of the previous 10 years and had never finished in the top three before," said Newman, who competes for Bristol & District Triathlon Club.

"It was great to win it at last and I was really pleased with my run. Also a little surprised as there was a very strong contingent from Bristol University and it was probably a bit unexpected."

Clearly Newman's running sessions with Clevedon Athletic Club have paid off as he concentrates on that side of the triathlon in the winter months – the close season for his main sport.

"I have been training with Clevedon and Steve Hollier has been advising me which has worked really well," added Newman, who works as a graphic designer in the city.

While Newman will use the winter to sharpen his running skills, he is already making plans for the 2010 triathlon season.

"The big target for next year will be the age group events at the World Championships, in Budapest," explained Newman, who gets support from MOTI and Fred Baker Cycles.

"I have competed for Great Britain three times and it would be great to make it four next year."
