1946: Newcastle equalled the Football League record for the biggest winning margin with a 13-0 victory over Newport County in Division Two.

1957: Led by Dai Rees, the Britain and Ireland Ryder Cup team beat America at Lindrick to register their first win since 1933.

2006: Former France and Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez announced his retirement from football - he then made a comeback two months later with French Ligue 1 side Nantes.

2007: Three-time Olympic champion Marion Jones pleaded guilty to lying to US government investigators when she denied using performance-enhancing drugs, then announced her retirement from athletics. She was sentenced to six months in prison in January 2008.
