MANAGER Steve Coppell witnessed a goal from his first signing for Bristol City in his opening game in charge.

Albert Adomah, the new recruit from Barnet, netted the opener in a 1-1 draw with former Uefa Cup winners IFK Gothenburg in Sweden.

In the absence of injured skipper Louis Carey, new boss Coppell handed the captain's armband to midfielder Cole Skuse.

Coppell has not yet decided who his captain will be in the long-term and, although Carey remains favourite for the role, the former Reading chief admitted Skuse was also a candidate.

Coppell said: "I am glad we didn't get beaten. It went alright. We have had a hectic few days – the players were up at 4am yesterday (for the flight to Sweden).

"We trained yesterday and we trained this morning, so it has been physically demanding."

On Skuse, Coppell said: "I think he's captain material. I think a lot of players in the club are really sensible. He is a proud Bristol player and it wasn't really a big decision.

"I have to find an eleven first and we have got a lot of games ahead of us. Some players may filter to the top and some may drop to the bottom."

Ex-Barnet winger Adomah opened the scoring shortly before half-time with a superb 20-yard shot in a game that also saw Kalifa Cisse make his first appearance for the club following his move from Reading.

The Mali international, who is normally a midfielder, made his Robins debut in his secondary position – central defence.

The hosts drew level six minutes after half-time through Tobias Hysen in front of a healthy crowd in Kungsbacka.

Adomah looked bright from the kick-off and was unlucky to see a lively run ended with a crude foul as City employed a 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation.

At the other end, goalkeeper Stephen Henderson, who played in place of last season's No 1 Dean Gerken, made a good save from a corner, denying a close-range header. Bradley Orr then executed a goal-line clearance to deny Hysen after the forward had skipped around Henderson on 10 minutes.

The opener arrived on the half-hour when right-back Orr's cross was only half-cleared. Adomah pounced on the edge of the box to score with a dipping strike into the top corner.

Gothenburg, who are halfway through their season, were always going to be stronger with their superior fitness in the second half, and they levelled within six minutes of the restart.

A lofted through-ball put Hysen away and he coolly slotted home beyond Henderson.

The City keeper made a couple of decent saves as the half wore on, while City made a series of substitutions to liven up their play. In the end a draw was a fair result.

Meanwhile, City's away trip to Swansea City in November has been put back 24 hours.

The game was originally due to be played on Tuesday, November 9, but will now go ahead on Wednesday, November 10.

Bristol City: Henderson; Orr (Ball 77), Cisse (Elliott 57), Nyatanga, Fontaine; Skuse, Williams (Akinde 57), Johnson (McAllister 65); Sproule (Campbell-Ryce 57), Clarkson (O'Flynn 57), Adomah (Edwards 77).

“In Steve we trust. It was refreshing to hear the comments made by Bluebaldee too, a loyal Rovers fan, about Albert. It is good to see such a good player can be respected from a supporter of another Football Club. Good luck for next season Bluebaldee, and you might just even join us in the Championship too.”

“Dare i say it but i think Riberio is a better player than Orr and is a more than adequate replacement, but he does have fitness issues so a replacement maybe
necessary. Sounds like the team got a good run out in Gothenburg, bodes well for the season ahead.”

“If Orr does go i think we have a decent enough replacement in CR, perhaps a loan signing until he is fully fit would suffice?”

“sounded like a decent workout against a decent team. Hoping to see some new signings coming soon as our squad looks pretty thin at the moment with Hartley and Orr due to leave.”
