New sewer will reduce flood risk
A road in Wickwar is about to be closed for 11 weeks while a new sewer is built.
Work will start next month on the project, which is aimed at preventing premises in Station Road flooding in heavy rain.
Wessex Water is spending more than £300,000 on the sewer, which will run from outside the Wickwar Brewing Company premises towards the railway bridge at the lower end of the village.
It will provide extra capacity in the sewer network but, while engineers and contractors are on site, that part of Station Road will be closed to through traffic.
Drivers travelling between Wickwar, near Chipping Sodbury, and Kingswood, near Wotton-under-Edge, will be diverted through Charfield, following a route that larger vehicles have to follow anyway in order to avoid the railway bridge.
People will still be able to reach businesses such as the brewery and Archfield Nurseries.
Nick Chadwick, lead design engineer for the project, said: "We have liaised with local businesses to minimise any impact on deliveries or passing trade and will have signs in place advising it is business as usual.
"Throughout the road closure, motorists who usually travel through this part of Wickwar will need to follow the diversion, which is the route larger vehicles use on a regular basis.
"We apologise to any drivers who experience a short delay to their journey while the essential flood alleviation work takes place."
Wickwar Parish Council has also been consulted about the scheme and letters have been sent to householders in the area, outlining the work to be carried out.
The work is due to start on Monday, October 12.
