A church in Henleaze finally has a new roof, four months after thieves stripped its lead flashing.

Now St Peter's, in The Drive, has a new £20,000 roof made of carbon resin covering both the North and South aisles.

In May, the Post reported that sections of the church roof had been stripped by thieves overnight on three occasions, leaving the roof leaking.

During bouts of heavy rainfall water was streaming down the walls, despite a temporary cover of plastic sheeting.

For months, parishioners had resorted to paddling pools to catch leaking water – a total of eight children's paddling pools, 20 plastic boxes and seven buckets were lined up to catch it.

Contractors had to wait for several consecutive days of dry weather to put the new roof in place, but now it is finished.

St Peter's vicar, the Rev Mark Pilgrim, said: "We are really happy with the results.

"We would love any donations people feel they can afford. We are delighted to be able to pack away the paddling pools and get the chairs back out again."

To make a donation, call the parish office on 01179 62 8485.

● St Peter's is collecting for its harvest festival until the communion service on September 27 at 9.45am.
