A South Gloucestershire councillor is pressing for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on a busy road in Alveston – two years after a petition calling for safety measures was handed over.

Maggie Tyrrell said Down Road was "chaotic" at certain times of the day, especially when children were going to and from local schools.

A number of pupils at both St Helen's Primary and Marlwood Secondary schools cross the road near the junction with Vattingstone Lane.

Cllr Tyrrell, who represents Thornbury South and Alveston, said: "Around school time it's chaos in that area, with lots of children crossing over the road. I presented a petition in 2007 on behalf of local people who were calling for a pedestrian crossing on Down Road."

She said the request was rejected on the grounds of the small number of pedestrians outside school times. But she said a crossing was installed on Grovesend Road in Thornbury where there was a similar situation.

Mrs Tyrrell said: "We are still waiting for some safety measure to be implemented and I will continue to pursue it."

Brian Allinson, South Gloucestershire Council's executive member for transport and planning, said he would investigate the request.
