Parking restrictions have been put in place in a Bristol residential street preventing people from parking outside their homes.

Bristol City Council has altered parking on a stretch of Cumberland Road, stopping people from using marked bays for longer than four hours from 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday. Previously parking was not restricted.

It is believed the authority will also be installing pay and display machines along the road in the future, although the council has yet to confirm this.

Some residents are concerned that the move will cause problems for people living in multi-occupancy flats with only one parking space and others were concerned about what it would mean when visitors came to stay.

But others believe the changes have actually made the stretch safer.

One woman, who has lived in Cumberland Road for a month, but did not wish to be named, said: "I live in a three-bed flat with two other professionals and this is quite a problem for us. We relied on using the road for parking."

Trudi Farrington-Darby, 38, an ergonomist, said: "With visitors, where else can they go? If someone comes to stay for the weekend they will have to keep moving their vehicles. I have a neighbour with a baby who parks on the road and will now have to keep moving her car."

One woman, who lives in The Quays complex in Cumberland Road, but did not wish to be named, said that the yellow lines that had been put down as part of the parking restrictions had made it easier for her to pull out of the private car park onto the main road.

A man who wished to be known only as Chris also said that the addition of yellow lines had actually made it easier to get out of the complex.

No one from the city council was able to comment about the changes last night.

Shame you couldn't get any quotes BEP.

It's far more dangerous for anyone to cross Cumberland Road, just look for the dead foxes...”

“The council obviously has a cunning plan to raise more revenue through parking tickets. The extortionate council tax isn't enough and they want your cash if you live in cumberland basin. I don't live in that area, but have empathy for the residents whose lives will become significantly more stressful. I used to live in Clifton for many years but got so fed up, after the CPZ was introduced I ran for the suburbs. Now they have done the same where I live now, which is totally unnecessary. The planners at College Green won't be happy until Bristol has become a miniature London. Have these great minds ever dreamed up an idea that if they had an affordable, reliable joined up transport system half of us wouldn't need cars. It will be interesting to see what the impact is on the neighbouring streets, or will they introduce resident parking permits to cause more stress. The council needs to stop employing people with degrees and try to attract those with common sense.”

“I would like to thank the Council for doing this, it means that I can speed along Cumberland Road at 70 miles an hour without having to slow down anymore.

    Top one Mr Council man...”

“Given this road was full of commuter traffic monday to friday, this restriction means that locals may be able to park there now. Why was saturday included? No idea.”
