Children in Pill could soon have some extra equipment installed at a play area in the village.

The improvements, being funded by a £37,000 grant from North Somerset Council, include plans to put some new play equipment at the Brookside playing fields.

Pill Parish Council is also looking at improving the facilities at the Hardwick Road playing field.

Parish councillors have been in discussions with the authority about the type of equipment needed and, once agreed, the plans will go on show at the village's Resource Centre for local people to comment on them.

There is already play equipment at Hardwick Road, but over the years it has become tatty.

A play pod, funded and run by North Somerset Council, is also in place at Brookside Playing Fields.

A multi-use games area and a youth shelter has recently been installed at Watchouse Hill in the village for older teenagers and the parish council is now keen to improve facilities for younger children, aged between eight and 14.

The parish council is also in the process of taking over the lease for the Brookside Playing Fields.

The field is owned by North Somerset Council and currently leased to Crockerne Primary School.

Pill Parish Council chairman Gerry Hunt said: "A number of people have approached the council saying they would like to see more play equipment in the village for younger children. This funding that has been made available by North Somerset Council is a real welcome boost."

North Somerset Council spokeswoman Zoe Briffitt said: "We are waiting for the ownership and the ongoing maintenance issues to be finalised. There is £37,000 allocated to refurbish the play area."
