New pedestrian crossing campaign for Longwell Green
A campaign has begun to get a pedestrian crossing installed on a busy road near the Marks & Spencer store at Longwell Green.
Residents say the traffic is now so bad, it is difficult to cross the road in Aldermoor Way.
People who live in nearby homes use the Marks & Spencer store and a nearby Asda supermarket for their shopping.
Pensioner Yvonne Grant, 81, who lives in Burbank Close, said: "It's a job to cross the road because the traffic is so bad.
"You're taking your life into your hands every time you step off the pavement."
Civil servant Paul Jefferies, 51, who lives in Moorcroft Road, said: "This is very much a concern, not just for myself, but for elderly people and mothers with pushchairs.
"It's busy all the time now. We need somewhere for people to cross in safety."
Chris Skidmore, prospective Tory parliamentary candidate for Kingswood, said: "This is an important issue for people in Longwell Green.
"Clearly, there is a safety issue which needs to be addressed.
"I have asked South Gloucestershire Council, the local highways authority, to investigate putting in a pedestrian crossing."
He has started a petition and sent leaflets to people who live in the area.
Mr Skidmore is being backed by Tory district councillors Christine Price (Longwell Green) and Tony Olpin (Parkwall).
Mrs Price said: It's getting busier all the time, goodness knows what it is going to be like nearer Christmas."
Mr Olpin said he would like to see a one-way system in Aldermoor Way to ease congestion.
"This retail park has become a victim of its own success – it just gets busier and busier."
A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: "A pedestrian count has just been conducted and the results are currently being analysed, which will help inform decisions around the future transport capital programme."
