Two new links from the Bristol and Bath Railway Path could benefit cyclists and walkers living in Speedwell, St George, Redfield and Whitehall.

The proposed links would serve Bristol Brunel Academy and Speedwell residents, and St George and Redfield residents via St George's Park. Consultations on the plans will be held by the Greater Bristol Cycling City group from next week.

One link from Bristol Brunel Academy would take a route through Ridgeway playing fields with a crossing at Whitefield Road, Speedwell. The other link involves a new crossing at Whitehall Road, Whitehall, and a contraflow facility along Stretford Road, Whitehall, to link to the centre of St George's Park.

Drop-in sessions with maps of the plans will be held on Monday, July 13, between 4pm and 7.30pm at Whitehall Rugby Club, Foundry Lane; and on Wednesday, July 15, between 4pm and 7.30pm, at St Ambrose Church, Stretford Road.

Councillor Jon Rogers, Bristol City Council executive member for transport and sustainability, said: "The Bristol and Bath Railway Path is one of Britain's most attractive and well-used cycle routes. It is used by 2,500 commuters to work and school every morning, reducing car journeys and congestion, and giving benefits all round.

"These new links are just one of the many elements we are considering to increase use of this popular Path still further."

“I agree, if a path already exists and is to be widened or resurfaced then one cannot call it a 'new' link.

We dont call roads 'new' every time they are altered.

This is just a lame attempt by the council to hide the fact they arent really building much truely new infrastructure. Its only the cyclists that already use these "NEW" paths that know the truth. The general public will wonder what we are moaning about because they are being told (lied to) that the council are spending their money on new stuff when they arent.

    Call a spade a spade!”

“I think accusing the Council of lying when they are doing some good is a little harsh.

On the flip side, the council should use the correct terminology, if the path is to be improved or upgraded, then why not say this...? ?

Cllr Jon, is this coming from Bristol City council funds or the City of Cyling kitty?”

    “Thanks Adam,

I made the mistake of making a link to the article directly after having posted a comment, so the link went directly to the comments and showed my settings on the comment box.”

“Hi Chris. Yes, I used the tinyurl link you posted on the forum. That may be the cause. I see you supplied a second link too. I'll empty my computer cache and all should be fine.
