A new community room at Bannerman Road Children's Centre in Easton has been named after one of its most loyal supporters.

The facility is known as the Hazel Room, in tribute to 74-year-old Hazel Bailey, who still works at the centre five days a week.

Hazel, who lives just off Whitehall Road, pops in for an hour at lunchtimes to clean the toilets and spend time with the staff and children.

"When I come in, the children run up to greet me and call my name," said Hazel. "I love working with the children and being around them."

Hazel had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the room, which is being used for stay and play sessions, community groups and adult learning.

A plaque on the wall marks the occasion and a sign on the door says that the hazel nut is seen as a powerful symbol of wisdom.

Hazel came to England from Jamaica in 1965 and is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ashley Road.

She is well-known in Bristol from her time on the buses, where she worked as a conductor for nearly 25 years until 1994.
