The Wessex Centre grass racing season commences on Sunday with a Bristol Combine adult and youth meeting on a new circuit at Stanton St Quinton.

The venue, situated near Chippenham, is just one mile from junction 17 of the M4.

With Swindon's John Jefferies and Steve Masters clashing with Tim Nobes, Charles Saunders, Rod Melksham, John Weeks and Paul Derrick, it looks like being a cracker.

Paul Fudge, who thrilled the crowds a decade or so ago is coming out of retirement to take part with Jim Collins.

The Combine are also staging an all youth meeting at the Hangar Farm venue tomorrow afternoon.

The World Motocross Championships begin in Italy next week, but this weekend the UK's leading lights will be concentrating on the second round of the National Series at Langrish, near Petersfield, on Sunday.

Marshfield's Tom Church goes to the Manor Farm circuit in third place in the open class, seven points behind Brad Anderson and Carl Nunn.

Chippenham-based Scot Stephen Sword was suffering from a throat infection in the first round at Swanley in Kent, but he still finished third overall behind current champion Shaun Simpson and Neville Bradshaw – and he will be out to get within striking distance of Simpson, who is being tipped to win the World 250cc series this year.

Yeovil trial star Ricky Wiggins, who is dominating the South West Centre Championship, faces a long trek to Kinlochleven in Scotland on Sunday for the second round of the British Championships, where he will be hoping to gain his second consecutive win in the experts class.

Meanwhile, up to 80 stars of tomorrow are in action in the West Country over the weekend as 35 C and D class contestants compete in the third round of the National Series staged tomorrow by the West of England club at Hedge Barton, near Widecombe-in- the-Moor, while 45 A and B class entrants are contesting the Otter Vale Club's third round at Sidbury, in East Devon, on Sunday, including Jack Shepherd and Richard Sadler who have finished first and second in the two previous rounds in the A class.
