Bristol City boss Derek McInnes handed Mark Wilson a debut in today's npower Championship curtain-raiser at Nottingham Forest.

Signed on a short-term contract on Thursday night, the former Celtic defender was allowed to play only after the Robins received international clearance just hours before kick-off at the City Ground.

Right-back Wilson was one of four changes to a back five that was exposed by Gillingham in the first round of the Capital One League Cup in midweek.

Former Cardiff goalkeeper Tom Heaton was preferred to Dean Gerken and made his debut between the sticks, as did fellow new signing Greg Cunningham, who lined up at left-back.

Now fully recovered from a hip- injury, veteran defender Louis Carey came in for Lewin Nyatanga to partner Liam Fontaine at the heart of the back four.

McInnes opted for a defensively strong midfield, moving right-back Richard Foster into a more advanced role and returning Cole Skuse to the engine room alongside Stephen Pearson and Martyn Woolford.

Winger Albert Adomah was deployed in a more central attacking role just behind lone striker Jon Stead.

Forest gave debuts to Dan Harding, Danny Collins and Greg Halford, but were without new signing Daniel Ayala and left £2m striker Simon Cox on the bench.

Forest (4-1-4-1): Camp; Maloney, Halford, Collins, Harding; Gillett; Majewski, McGugan, Guedioura, Reid; Blackstock. Subs: Hutchinson, Greening, Lascelles, McGoldrick, Cox, Tudgay, Evtimov (gk).

City (4-4-1-1): Heaton; M Wilson, Carey, Fontaine, Cunningham; Foster, Skuse, Pearson, Woolford; Adomah; Stead. Subs: J Wilson, Elliott, Kilkenny, Anderson, Pitman, Morris, Gerken (gk).

“Woolford and Pearson better perform, after Tuesdays night performance they dont deserve to be on the bench let alone in the starting line-up! Why the hell Elliott isnt starting who is the only player who managed to score and he was on the pitch for only 5 poxy minutes! Feel sorry for Anderson must be painful sitting on the bench watching Woolford losing the ball everytime he gets possession. It's painful enough watching it from the stand! Why he still hasn't got into the starting line-up is beyond me.

This line-up looks very very very weak. We are going to get demolished in midfield, playing a RB in RM, makes sense..? Only real quality in midfield is Skuse, looks like he's going to have to be a one-man-army in midfield today.

Adomah sitting behind Stead could work. But they wont get much supply and support from Midfield. Woolford can barely kick a football. Pearson is poor with no creativity. Skuse is more of a Defensive Midfielder and Foster is a RB.

Well, hopefully we'll get away with it. The Defence looks good, it's the defence i personally would of chosen.

Glad to see Heaton, Cunningham and Mark Wilson making their debuts today. Welcome to the club lads and best of luck for today and for the many games to come.

I fear we will not get a point from todays game. We will do very well to scrape a draw or a scrappy 1-0 win. But, we are City, we always believe! and all that! Go out there and try your hardest!

“Been waiting to see the team. As is now usual, it's Woolford and 10 others.”

“Whatever the outcome to-day it's bringing on new blood that counts in the longer run.

    Good luck Mark and COYRs.”
