Firefighters from New York took on their English counterparts in a special cricket match in Congresbury.

A group of 13 firefighters from the Big Apple pitted themselves against a team from Bristol International Airport for the Cyder Cup match at Cadbury House Hotel Health Club and Spa.

Following the format of golf's the Ryder Cup, the challenge match was instigated to provide respite to firefighters involved in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on New York's World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

This year's event was won by the US team and the team from the BIA are looking forward to visiting New York in two years' time to try to win the cup back.

The event, which takes place every two years, has resulted in lasting friendships and a friendly rivalry between the British and American firefighters.

The fire services manager at Bristol International Airport, Symon Clifford, said: "The Cyder Cup came about because we wanted to show solidarity with the firefighters in New York following 9/11, and since then it has become a well-established tradition.

"The Americans love visiting the South West and we all enjoy the chance to share knowledge and experience with colleagues from another country."

Cadbury House group general manager Mark Hands said: "The New York firefighters were a fantastic bunch and we were delighted to host them here at the hotel and hear about their experiences.

"We hope the competition remains a fixed event for years to come and look forward to seeing them again in the west country."
