A successful family-run business is to open a new DIY and homewares store at the former Woolworths in Clevedon.

Proper Job, which is run by father and son team Ray and Peter Tilley, is expanding its operations and opening a fifth store at the former Woolies in Old Street.

The new 3000sq ft store, which will create a number of new jobs in the town, is due to open by the end of the week.

There are already Proper Job stores in Devonshire Road, Weston-super-Mare, High Street, Worle, Warrington Road, Brislington, Bristol, and in the centre of Glastonbury.

The business has grown from strength to strength since it launched as Tilley's Tools in the 1980s based in Cornwall.

The Tilleys moved their operations to Weston in the 1980s and were based at a warehouse at Warne Park where they ran a wholesale business.

In 1997, they opened their first Proper Job store at Devonshire Road and then went on to open the Worle store in the High Street in 2000, the Bristol store in 2004 and the Glastonbury store, in the town's former Kwik Save supermarket, in 2007.

Ray, aged 72, said the change of name was down to his customers in Cornwall.

Ray said: "In Cornwall people don't tend to use the phrase 'thank you'. Instead they say, 'that's a proper job'. I thought it would make a great name for the stores, so we changed it and the rest is history."

The company now employs around 80 people at its stores and warehouse in Weston-super-Mare.

The new store will stock the same range of tools, DIY and homewares that Proper Job has become famous for locally.

It will sell a range of items including paint, DIY tools, black sacks, car care items, wheelbarrows, kitchen rolls and a range of homewares.

Peter, 37, who is overseeing the development of the Clevedon store, said: "The stock will be similar to that which is in other stores and will be a lot of useful, practical things which are needed by everyone.

"People say that Proper Job is like an Aladdin's Cave and that's a good way of describing our stores.

"We chose Clevedon as there is a good size population and the store and its size worked for us.

"We thought it was a good time to grow the business again."

Woolworths in Clevedon closed for the final time in December 2008 after the company, which has been trading on the streets of Britain for 100 years, ran into financial trouble.

The Nailsea store in the High Street also closed down in January this year but was taken over by the discount chain, Factory Outlet Stores, which opened for business in May.

Shoppers have flocked through the doors since it opened, picking up brand name goods at discounted prices. Business leaders have welcomed the arrival of Proper Job in Clevedon, saying it will be a real boost to the town.

Clevedon Chamber of Trade and Commerce president, David Hendey, said: "It is fantastic to see the Woolworths store being taken over by a successful locally-based business.

"I hope that the opening of Proper Job will bring extra footfall to this area of the town."
