New Bristol learning centre gets boost from Christmas bazaar
Shoppers in Knowle were joined by festive fairies at a Christmas bazaar market to raise money for the Mede learning and community centre in Inns Court.
Full of Christmas spirit, people browsed the arts and crafts stalls to buy everything from personalised jewellery and candles to cakes and sweets.
Others warmed themselves with glasses of mulled wine and nibbled on roasted chestnuts, and children had their faces painted and enjoyed games.
The hall was also decorated by the Moving On group, a group of about 20 people from the local area who have learning difficulties.
They made beautiful Christmas decorations for the market, and spent Thursday putting them up ready for people to enjoy at the bazaar.
Proceeds from the market will go towards setting up a parent and toddler group and dance classes for people with learning difficulties.
Emma Hollingshead, 24, community development worker at the Mede centre, said: "We like to put on community events for the people as they are an opportunity to bring everyone together.
"The Mede learning and community centre is a registered charity, and we are raising funds for a new toddler group and some dance classes.
"There aren't that many toddler services available in the area, so we want to set something up where mums and dads can come along for a couple of hours each week and their children can play and get to know each other.
"We have just got volunteers to help run it, and local people have donated equipment for us to use, so hopefully we can have it up and running in January.
"Ideally we would like to raise about £1,000 to get it started."
Stalls at the Christmas bazaar were rented out for £5 each, with proceeds going to the Mede's charity.
The money will also help pay for two dance classes.
One, called Get Your Groove On, will help people with learning difficulties integrate with the community and will see them learn and perform dance routines, such as Michael Jackson's Thriller and dances from Grease and Dirty Dancing.
Another group, Funk It Up, will be held in the evenings for everyone from teenagers upwards.
Miss Hollingshead said: "It is brilliant because dance is a great way of expressing yourself and to meet other people.
"It is nice to bring everyone together, and hopefully the market will get everyone into the festive feel of things."
