Danny Haynes is keen to shed his tag as a bit-part player now that he has signed for Bristol City.

The 21-year-old winger-cum-striker last night completed his transfer from Championship rivals Ipswich Town for an undisclosed six-figure fee, penning a deal which will keep him at Ashton Gate for the next three years.

And the Londoner immediately declared his intention to establish himself as a first-team regular in the West.

"I'm here to play first-team football," confirmed Haynes, who fell out of favour at Portman Road following the appointment of Roy Keane as manager in April.

"I was always in and out of the team at Ipswich and found it difficult to establish myself. But having talked to (Bristol City manager) Gary Johnson, I believe things will be different here and I'll be given an opportunity.

"I owe Ipswich a lot because they gave me my first big break, but I feel this is the right time to move on and this is the right club for me. City is a club going places and I'm really pleased to be joining them."

City boss Johnson made an initial bid for Haynes during the January transfer window, only to be told the former Charlton trainee was not for sale.

But he kept tabs on the youngster and tabled a renewed offer last month.

Haynes said: "I heard a few rumours while on holiday during the summer and then found out there had been some bids when I returned home.

"City have done really well in the Championship over the past two seasons and I was excited when I heard they were interested in me.

"My mind was made up when I met Gary Johnson. He seems a really nice man and he sold the club to me."

Deployed essentially as a winger at Ipswich, Haynes can also play in a central striking role.

Johnson said: "He can play out wide, but I see him more as an attacking forward, someone who can play in a three up front.

"He's not the finished article yet, but he's very quick, strong and direct and he's always done well when he's played for Ipswich against us.

"There comes a time when you have to stop calling a player an up-and-coming prospect and I believe Danny has reached that stage. I see him as someone who can challenge for a first-team place straight away."

He added: "We went in for him back in January and were told in no uncertain terms that he was not available. But things have changed at Ipswich since then and the lad now feels he needs a move and a new challenge."

Haynes signed too late to feature in last night's friendly at Hereford and will instead make his debut in Wednesday's high-profile meeting with Ajax at Ashton Gate.

“One signing that does appear to be missing is the "target" man. Which i think is a good thing.

Looks to me that GJ is having a change of approach and we could be watching a faster and more dynamic approach to our attacking play this season. I for one hope so.

With the signings made so far and the trialists that appeared last night it certainly looks to be heading that way.

    Thoughts??”
