THIS year's Bristol International Balloon Fiesta was officially launched with a little help from the Royal Navy.

The 2009 event, set to take place from Thursday, August 6, until Sunday, August 9, comes on the 100th anniversary of naval aviation.

Bristol's Royal Naval Reserve marked the launch onboard HMS Middleton, the largest naval ship the city harbour can handle.

Last night it was moored alongside the Arnolfini for the fiesta's special launch ceremony.

In a symbolic gesture, a letter of support, written by the navy Commander in Chief, was attached to a replica hot air balloon and sent to the director of the balloon fiesta on the ship's deck.

The event was attended by cadets and representatives of the other armed forces, local dignitaries and representatives from the fiesta.
