THE Nationwide Building Society has confirmed it is planning to close two of its branches in the Bristol area within the next three months.

The lender took the decision to close the branches in the city centre and in East Street, Bedminster, after carrying out a review of its business.

A spokesperson for the building society said: "This is not a decision we have taken lightly and we have written to all the customers who use those branches to let them know what is happening.

"We made the decision to close the branches in Baldwin Street and in Bedminster after taking into account a number of factors, including the amount of customers who use both branches and their profitability."

The spokesperson would not confirm how many staff were affected by the closures but said most of them would be moved to other branches.

She added: "It is our policy not to give details of the numbers of people who work in each branch for security reasons but we have been talking to staff and we are confident we can find new roles for everyone affected by the closures."

At present the Nationwide has five branches in Bristol. The branches which will stay open in Bristol are in Westbury-on-Trym, Kingswood and Cabot Circus in the city centre.

The spokesperson added: "One of the reasons the decision was taken to close the Baldwin Street was its proximity to our branch in Cabot Circus. We are advising that customers from both branches use Cabot Circus. The city centre branch is less than a mile from East Street but we would apologise to our customers for any inconvenience."

Both of the branches are due to close at the end of May.

Over the last two years there have been a series of branch closures across the South West.

“Yet again, with the closure of the Bedminter branch, here is no longer a branch in south Bristol. I used the one in Kingswod once and it was a nightmare. There were only two counters and the queue was a long way outside the door.”

“Presumably this is a drive to encourage more people to use their phone and internet services.

I wanted to talk to an adviser at Cabot Circus and was told there was a wait of 4 week. I used their phone service and everything was sorted out 20 minutes later!”

“Our nearest branch was closed a few years ago in Nailsea, it was a drive of approx 4 miles. I now have to go to either WSM (10 miles plus have to pay to park) or Bristol (15 miles away, again pay to park). Fortunately I use internet banking so not a great problem other then the odd cheque to be banked (very rare these days) - however, I cannot help but think that the Nationwide are alientating a lot of customers and will lose many as a result of their closures. this would be a great shame as it is one of the few genuine UK building society/banks in existance.”
