Top Avon teenage long-jumper Natasha Lewis atoned for her disappointing performance at the English schools' Championships with a superb personal best to claim victory in the UK School Games at Cardiff.

Lewis, who is coached by Bristol's Paul Weston, cleared 5.66 metres for one of seven victories for the South West team to finish second, one point behind Yorkshire & Humberside.

"That is the best result the South West have enjoyed at the UK School Games and the athletes were magnificent," said boys' team manager Dave Turner.

Bristol athlete Ryan Ashwood and Yate & District's Adam McBraida helped the boys' 4x400m relay team finish third and there were fourth places for Floren Scrafton in the 1,500m and McBraida in the 100m hurdles.

In the most exciting race of the day, Clevedon AC's Cameron Coetzee came within four seconds of the course record when winning the Under-15 boys' race in the Bristol road miles, held around College Green.

Coetzee had a battle with Bristol & West AC's Luke Jacobs before edging clear to win in 4mins 52secs, narrowly outside the record of 4:48, held jointly by Richard Peters and Tom Curr.

Naomi Speake was back in action after injury, winning the Under-17 women's race from Bristol & West club-mate Olivia Sadler, while her twin Adam was runner-up to Sam Bedwell in the Under-17 men's race.

There was a disappointing turn-out for the senior races, with Katie Knowles running out an easy winner of the women's section and Cardiff's Chris Moss retaining his men's title after a battle with Clevedon international James Thie.

In the street sprints, there were wins for Yatton Junior School youngster Aidan Paul and Georgia Taylor, of the Christ Church Junior School, in Downend.

Bristol & West AC's Kate Goodhead finished 11th in the World Mountain Running Championships, in Italy, to help the Great Britain team win the silver team medals. Goodhead had been lying sixth until taking a heavy fall in the closing stages.

Bristol & West AC Olympic 10,000m runner Kate Reed was forced to drop out of the Great Yorkshire Run 10k, in Sheffield, after suffering foot problems.

Yate & District AC's Joanne Eaton ran 12.52secs for the 100m, equalling her season's best, and 14.56secs in the 100m hurdles at the club's Sprints & Hurdles festival.

Phil Wylie clocked a personal best of 30mins 09secs to finish fourth in the Cardiff 10k.
