Bristol potter Andrew Norman has failed to qualify for this month's BBC-televised Maplin UK Championship in Telford.

The Nailsea professional slipped to a 9-7 defeat at the hands of Lee Spick in the second round of qualifying at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

And with defeat Norman missed out on a penultimate qualifying round clash with Chinese whizkid Liang Wenbo, a quarter-finalist at last season's World Championship.

"I didn't play particularly bad, but it was a scrappy match," reflected Norman, who managed just one break over 50.

Runs of 47 and 47 helped the world No 54 established a slender 5-4 lead, but Spick hit back to lead 7-6.

A break of 87 – his highest of the match – saw Norman level at 7-7, but his opponent won the next two frames to deservedly progress.

Spick had breaks of 55, 54, 64 and 54, and Norman added: "He played quite well, but I had enough opportunities to win the match. I just didn't take them, which is disappointing.

"For some reason I couldn't really get going, I was struggling to win a frame at one visit. It's frustrating, but I'll just have to get back to the practice table and come back stronger."

Fellow Bristol potter Judd Trump will be in action on Saturday against Chinese cueman Jin Long.

Victory for Trump would yield a final qualifying round showdown with Dubliner Michael Judge.
