Murray hails 'outstanding' display from Bristol City's Haynes

Bristol City legend Scott Murray admits Danny Haynes' performance against West Brom was one he would have been proud of in his prime.

The Ashton Gate favourite left City last May but was back there on Sunday to observe that the tradition of exciting Robins wing-play is in safe hands with the electric Haynes.

Haynes gave England Under-21 left-back Joe Mattock a hellish afternoon, constantly outpacing the former Leicester man before setting up Lee Johnson's winner in a 2-1 victory.

Murray regularly performed similar deeds – and had an eye for goal himself – during his 11 years with City.

The Scotsman's work was rewarded in January when City fans voted him the club's player of the decade in an Evening Post online poll.

Murray said: "I thought Danny was outstanding. I think City fans enjoy seeing wide players and quick wide players especially and I thought he was superb.

"I felt sorry for the full-back because he had to play against Danny in that sort of form and then when he came off Ivan Sproule came on and he is just as quick!"

Haynes served early notice of his superior speed when he gave Mattock a head start only to burst past him in the initial minutes of the game.

"That is what can happen," said Murray. "Wingers are confidence players and if they know they can beat their full back in the first five minutes that sets the tone.

"It was definitely a performance I would have been proud of. I always like to run at defenders but never as quickly as that. I thought he was unbelievable."

An amusing footnote to the game was the sight of Mattock being chosen to undertake a drugs test after the match.

Meanwhile, Murray believes City's first win for more than a month can lift confidence going into the final quarter of the season.

"I think West Brom are one of the best teams in the league and in the first half they showed why they are up at the top end of the table," he said.

"But after halftime City closed them down quickly and West Brom couldn't get out of the starting blocks and City made a very good team look ordinary."

Murray, 35, joined Yeovil Town in the summer and is enjoying life in League One. "When I signed it was for a year with a view to signing another year if I was playing regularly," he said. "I will have to have a chat with the manager (Terry Skiverton) to see what will happen.

"I certainly want to carry on for another couple of years yet," added the player who brought up a century of goals earlier this term.

Murray's future career will be in coaching. Having looked after City's Under-14s last season, he moved up to coach the Under-16s this year.

"I enjoy it and it is definitely what I want to do in the future," he said. "We have got some good talent coming through."

Murray also spoke of his delight at winning the player of the decade award, beating off competition from Louis Carey, Leroy Lita and Brian Tinnion. "It was a massive honour and I couldn't believe it," he said. "With the amount of players to have played for City over ten years for the fans to vote for me was very nice.

"You can win a player of the year award but to win player of the decade is so much bigger. I don't get embarrassed by much but one of the lads at Yeovil cut it out and put it on my locker, which was great."
