Marshfield motocross star Tom Church made a dream debut on his maiden ride on a factory CCM in the first round of the National Open Class Title Series at Little Silver, near Exeter.

He was overall winner of the class without finishing first in either of the two 13-lap races.

He finished third to East Anglian Carl Nunn and Wiltshire-based Scot Stephen Sword in the first race and second to northerner Brad Anderson in the second.

With Nunn finishing well down the field in fifth place after a bad start, it meant that Church and Sword had finished with equal points, but the last race acts as a tie-breaker in such situations, and with Church finishing in front of Sword, he was declared the overall winner.

The first open race was stopped after only four laps in the interests of safety after several riders collided with Jason Dougan, Lewis Gregory and Nunn at the head of the field.

In the re-run, Dougan was last away, and it was Nunn, Sword and Church who became engaged in a three way battle for the lead that lasted for the whole distance.

In the second race, but Church moved into second place after six laps and Sword moved up to challenge him three laps from the end, but nevertheless positions remained the same.

Bristol's Joe Dark set the pace in the first Under-27 race, but within four laps he had lost places to Jake Nicholls, Scott Elderfield and Shane Carless. Nicholls won after holding a tight line on the numerous switchback turns. Back in serious training for the Scottish International Six Days Trial in May, Bristol's Scott Cameron was a 15 mark winner of the Mendip Vale Club's Winterhead Cup Trial at a new venue between Nailsea and Flax Bourton.

Staged over three laps of a dozen sections, the event attracted an entry of 80-plus. The fourth and last sections claimed most marks.
